Earlier you might have found me sat at a table at my favourite café wishing my dress would stay down over my backside, noticing, too late that it’s got a blinking tea stain on it and wondering how it is, that despite my very best intentions I am rocketing towards the end of Plajanuary* without anything like a proper plan for 2015.
*(I’m trying out a new name for it – Planuary was fun while it lasted but I’m thinking Plajanuary rocks more sylables – which if I could spell it – would read better…)
I’ve spent the week avoiding Jillian – we were re:introduced early doors on the weekend and she was mean, so I ditched her in favour of my new gal pal Adrienne – a yogini from Texas who’s gently taking me on a 30 day tour of the assanas. Now then! There’ll be none of that at the back. It’s a brilliant little online course and she is my new girl crush – funny and cute and totally unfussy about yoga. I like her approach – you find your own place in your practice.
I’m hoping you get that here too – the opportunity to find your own place. Dah dee dah – onwards…
Are you having problems with getting going? The first flush of January has given way to the weather, your horrid boss, the demands of the school run, the realisation that you don’t look ‘mint’ in that new workout top? No?! Just me then… Not the school run or the horrid boss – but the darned weather fairies are having a laugh and my new top ends up over my head, exposing my gut in dagwood dawg – totally not conducive to crazy happy gorgeousness. Close eyes, breath into the pose and chataranga the hell out of those arms love! Soon this too will be over.
In the meantime if you are experiencing some problems with getting going on the seriously, important business of Life Planning – then here’s a little Writing Shit Down 101 thing that will get your juices flowing. (I’m never sure about that phrase, but it’s arrived now so we’ll march on.)
Luli’s Writing Shit Down 101
The sharp among you will realise this is just a big excuse to buy more coloured pens and really big paper. I have a flip chart – I got it 2nd hand for a tenner – the BEST planning tool EVER – and it’s handy for all sorts. Really BIG notes for my partner, a score board for The Annual Boxing Day, Three Day Chapman oont David, Who is the Best at Everyhing Challenge and a work scheduler for the paid work I do. Seriously – get a flip chart – and coloured pens – planning will become your favourite thing!
Shiz You Will Need
In fact all you need is paper and pens. However the bigger the paper, the more pens you have in different colours – the more fun this becomes. This is a kick-starter exercise to get to the heart of your desire. If I were to ask you ‘What would you like to do next?’ and you didn’t know – this is a great place to start.
If you’ve already got a list of ideas, projects and notions then you’re one of the lucky ones – hooray for you! Plough on through to the next phase and onwards to your dreams. The rest of us have a bit more thinking and dreaming to do… We’ll catch you up mateys, order us a cuppah and hang tight til we get there.
The rest of us it’s time to crack on!
First things first relax yourself. You need to be somewhere comfy and quiet – no distractions and no deadlines.
Now write down 50 things I love to do ... What?! 50 things…? 50 whole things! Calm yourself lovelyone – I was going to go for 100! So just notice your resistance, accept it as fear and breathe. Do it! Do it! Do it!
Don’t panic, you can keep coming back to it over a couple of days… This is important work and these favourite things provide the clues to your heart’s desire. The things you love to do, they reveal your passions. Hush now – they do. To create a truly crazy happy gorgeous life you must know what lights you up and you must plan some of that into your life.
When you dig this lot out, you’ll be more than likely ready to attack all aspects of your planning. We resist planning if it feels like drudgery. We’ve already dumped the shouldings of it all – and now what we’re doing is making space for our dreams – so when it comes to organising our huge list of stuff – we’ve got plenty of gorgeous, lovely things to plan – which will support us to achieve some of the bigger challenges – whatever they might be.
A not entirely made up case study
Big Challenge – move more every day
50 things I love to do list
1. Meet new people
39. Watch Strictly Come Dancing
48. Watch The Biggest Loser (last episodes – I can never be bothered to commit to the whole thing)
So now then when creating my plan – I’ve got some clear actions.
* Find a local tango class
* Check out what the buzz is all about with Zumba
* Dig out more Jillian Michaels DVDs
* Check out whatsischops (the other trainer) online videos
…. and we’re off! Actions in support of my goal – Actions that I will love and more than likely be able to implement.
See – it’s easy! Now it’s your go.
Take a look at your list of 50 things I love to do list and the list of things you want to achieve this year and start to look for themes, traits and characteristics. Don’t worry about this too much – just notice anything that jumps out – this is all intel – grist to your planning mill. You’re starting the process of honing in on what is important to you lovelyone.
You are using Plajanuary to create your bespoke 2015 plan. Or at least a plan for Frabshusuary… Oh Hell No! This month renaming thing stops right here lady.
Now back to your 2015 goals… It’s time to put your sorting socks on and make some sense of all of your ideas and notions.
Phase 3 | The sorting sock shuffle
If you’re super clever – you can multi task and shuffle around your kitchen while you mull over this phase. You’ll get a great leg and toooshy workout, clean the lino AND complete the next phase of your planning bonanaza. Clever huh? We are planning ninja. Take another 3 deep breaths and float effortlessly above your next planning activity.
You’ve braindumped a load of things do get done in 2015.
You’ve created your list of things you love to do.
You’ve spotted some themes or not – no drama.
I’m hoping by now – you have also had a go at sorting your lists into the key areas you defined for yourself at the top of the month.
So now you’re ready to do some more sorting – to prioritise your unwieldy list of everything. If you’re not careful my love – you’ll be fully organised with absolutely no excuses for not nailing your goals by the end of February – and then you’ll be ready for the full Spring Clean – yoiks!
Here are my priority categories – you can choose your own – maybe a traffic light system – or something more fancy. My advice is keep it simple and continue to be honest with yourself.
1) must do soon
2) sometime this year
3) would love to do ( Are any of these coming from your inner ideal self – who is in fact your inner critic? Ditch the bitch and the Should Shamer too.)
Put anything that’s left into your handy dandy planningerator… Which by now will be stuffed full of ideas, lists and whatnottery.
Breaking It Down
I’m not sure but we might have moved onto Phase 4 – this is the part of the programme where we review our beautifully organised lists of goals. If you are anything like me you’ve got a lot of bits of paper, notebooks with a mixture of single action bullets and bigger goals. Now is the time my friend to get ruthless. Weed out the weak – and prune your plans – so the strongest will survive and thrive.
Lets face it – you’re not going to get all of this done in the first 3 weeks of the year – and to be honest – that’d stuff me right up – because my whole plan is to trot us through a full process. If you’ve got it all done by the middle of next week – I’m stuffed. Also have to say if you’ve got it all done by the middle of next week – you’re not bloody trying hard enough mate. We’re dealing with some life changing process here. On you go with your piffling little To Do List. Some of us have lives to upend.
What we need is to take a moment to make sure we’ve captured it all and wrangled it into manageable chunks with some clear priorities.
Then the very next thing we do – is have a cup of tea and a lie down.
Entering Phase 4 is no mean feat. You must be ready to face facts. You’ve set yourself a humungous task.
Luli’s 3 Steps to Organised Nirvana
Step 1: Break it Down
Go through your entire list of goals and using your handy dandy priority key – decide when you’d like to have each one nailed. Don’t muck about here give it a specific date.
Step 2: Get Real Missy!
For all of the Goals you’ve listed it’s time to consider your resources.
What have you got?
What do you need?
How long will it take you to get it?
Consider your goals in terms of the cash, skill, time and support you’ll need to achieve them. Don’t panic – be realistic. Build it into the plan.
Step 3: Moving Forward | Quick Wins
Break each goal out into the single actions you’ll need to take to move towards them. While you’re at it – start to link any interdependent actions by colour/symbol/ letter etc. If anything on the list has a dependency – you need to order these and date them too – this is your Quick Win Plan. That flip chart of mine isn’t looking so silly now is it?!
Carry on til you are in a position to put your goal into the big planning scheduler of everything ness…
You have reached your destination
Meditation | I’ve created a mediation to help you with accessing your confidence and self belief. We are all connected to the stars in a most intimate and magical way – This mediation helps you to create a Star Shield in your body and align it with a constellation.
The shield strengthens your confidence and reminds you of your unique talents & abilities. Only you can be you – even if you turn up in the same clobber as some other bird, with the same goals and the same hair do – you’re journey will still be uniquely yours to perfect. This my love will give you confidence – when you understand that your goals are an expression of your gifts. They represent your journey to weaving happiness and joy for yourself and the people around you.
Because of that – they are worthy of your time and effort.
Eeesh! We’re going to have to have a big talk about making time – next time.
Love to you
