You wait months and then two posts in a day.
In November I took part in a fantastic online course with Jessica Swift covering the basics of making repeat patterns in photoshop and illustrator. I was the dunce of the class really, but I plodded on and with the help of Jessica and the Pattern Camp online community I have continued to create patterns.
After an initial flurry and some success with attracting interest in my patterns – I froze up and lost a bit of momentum. By January I felt like I had forgotten the basics and struggled to draw with any confidence.
It’s so bloody easy to get your Felt Tips in a muddle if you get side tracked by wondering if you are any good. Hands up anyone who has pinteresred themselves into a total shut down. Every other bugger is better than me. Right?!
WRONG diddle dee wrong wrong!
Time to deal with this torpor head on. A daily practice beckons.
To deepen my learning and really get over ‘creativity fear’ I have decided to create a pattern every day during February.
I won’t put any restrictions on myself. It might be wholly created using apps, or from drawings or it might be a repeat pattern made from digital or hand drawn art or photographs or even collage.
It’s a month to play, fuck up, make a mess and discover new things.
Today’s pattern is made with apps from start to finish and is one of my signature glitch patterns.
I also made this:
The sharp among you will spot that it’s a screen grab from the app – which is why it is rotated by 90degrees.
No judgement. No wrong. Only the fun of creating new things.
Some will be worth perusing some will be a step towards learning and perfecting new skills.
I’m looking forward to what comes next!
